Luna

Luna, sheep extraordinaire.

Luna, sheep extraordinaire.

There are sheep and there are sheep — Luna is the latter. She has such a unique personality that her name has become Luna, the tunafish sandwich.

Luna as a lamb.

Luna as a lamb.

As a lamb, she was the type to baa in expectation that her mother would come trotting over to her (rather than the reverse). It takes quite a loud baa to call momma-ewe from across the pasture, so she would bellow. But the result is that she went hoarse and her baa became little more than a whisper. That in itself is not so unusual; I actually have a genetic line of such lambs.

Luna saying, "Baa"

The odd thing about Luna, is that she never went back to baaing like a normal lamb. To this day, she has a breathy baa unlike any sheep I’ve ever heard. Click to hear Luna say, “baa“.

Guppy, Luna's lamb.

Guppy, Luna's lamb.

Not only that, but her own lamb, Guppy, picked up on this sound. Guppy can baa normally, but whenever she wanted to call her mother, she would croak out a throaty baa. Click to hear Guppy’s croaking baa followed by other lambs baaing.

Baa, Maa or Ahh?

Grazing sheep; primarily ewes.

Grazing sheep; primarily ewes.

As a child I was taught the answer to, “What do sheep say?” is “baa”, but that’s because I live in North America. Other cultures have a different interpretation of ovine dialogue and would answer “maa”.

So, for your listening pleasure, I present some sheep conversation so you can be the judge.
