The wild tiger lilies are blooming in the ditch.

They are so vibrant against the brown green of the grass.

I think I enjoy them as much for their bright colour as just for the fact that I don’t have to plant or weed them. They do just fine without any of the pampering I have to devote to my flower garden.

This owl has been serenading us with quiet hoots late in the evenings. I think it’s a great horned owl, but I haven’t ventured close enough to be sure.

Johnny Jump Ups after a week of overnight frost.

We’ve had more than a week of overnight frost here, but I’m so delighted that my Johnny-Jump-Ups have stuck it out. They reseed themselves each year, so I need only reorganize them into a row. They’re out early in spring and here they are still putting on a show after everything else has been wiped out by frost.

With the sullenness of winter fast approaching: the days shortening, the trees nearly bare, the temperature dropping — it’s so nice to have a bit of floral cheer lingering in the garden.
